The Society offers a variety of classes in traditional crafts and trades held in the classroom at the Haupt Education Center, overlooking the Somerset Historical Center museum. Workshops are focused on skilled crafts passed down through generations of mentors, specific to southwestern Pennsylvania.
Annual School of Coopering- Participants use traditional tools and techniques to handcraft a wooden maple sugar keeler(bucket) like those used in the maple sugaring region of Somerset County PA. Click on link for brochure.
Tinsmithing- Participants learn the basics of using hand tools to produce several pieces of tin ware from cups to lanterns. Patterns, layout, cutting, piecing, riveting, and soldering tinplate metal is covered in the class.
Pysanky Egg Decorating- Learn to decorate traditional Ukrainian-style Easter eggs using beeswax and layered dyes.
